I have no qualms believing this is the most hated movie in the last… six months, maybe Still finding it pretty good.
Let’s get this out: I have played Assassin’s Creed and have (only recently) bought and tried my hand at the second one: I know the story and the characters, and I like it! I like what they did at first with this franchise, even if I still have to go throgh all of the games.
*** SPOILERS AHEAD ***
I also like the way they portrayed the Animus in the movie: it is obviously more catchy than a doctor explaining how the machine works, and then having Aguilar on screen 85% of the movie, forgetting everything about 2016 characters.
Do I like what they did with the historical setting of the first game/movie? 50/50.
I adored the references to Colombo and 1400s Spain (even if quite sparce), but I also did not like the way they decided to not set it in North Africa, maybe in an attempt to be politically correct and not open a religious discussion.
The photography and stunts, along with those background stumps, managed to draw in the Boyfriend and our friends, all of them ignorants to the franchise. But by the end of the movie all of us were still missing some answers:
- how did Callum’s parents know they were Assassins in a previous life? Does the Creed still live today, and if it does, how was it possible? How did it happen? Weren’t they all killed in Spain?
- Callum’s father says that his wife asked him to kill her in order to prevent her death at the hands of Abstergo: does it mean that she knew the location of the Apple? How would she know it without using the Animus? (linked with the first question)
- Cotillard’s character isn’t supposed to be on the good side? Why would she be mad at Callum if it was her in the first place that allowed the assassin in the palace? Or is it how she OH MY GOD NEW HEADCANON AHEAD
- IS THIS HOW IT ALL BEGAN? HOW SOPHIE “INFILTRATED” ABSTERGO (even if she already was a part of it) AND LATER HELPED DESMOND? IF SHE WERE TO HELP DESMOND IN A FOLLOWING MOVIE IT WOULD BE SO COOL
- why is the camera so shaky during the fight scenes? Why are the scenes so abruptly cut and pasted together? Is it to make it look cool and faster? Is it incompetence?
- all of the Abstergo hosts were assassins in their previous lives. Why does Abstergo have so many of them altogether, and why do all of them know of the apple?
If there really was a way for the Creed to survive 1400s Spain, how comes that in 2016 the Templars/Illuminati/Whatstheiractualname has so many at their hands?
Why would they let them live in so close quartiers, knowing that all of them know something about the Creed and the Apple and so many long lost secrets? Do you believe that by telling them not to speak their pasts they are not going to?
I liked it, maybe not adored it but I still think it’s an enjoyable movie and don’t think it should deserve all the hate it is getting. I most definitely want to see a sequel – maybe not with the same characters?
Please please please do a Sophie-meets-and-helps-Desmond-while-Callum-lives-in-the-shadows movie! I am soooo writing a fanfiction about this hahaha someone help me!
Would re-watch? Definitely, even if not in a couple of years.
Would recommend? Yeah, everybody watch this movie and give them a few euros and give it a chance! It is really entertaining.
